Chelsea vs Manchester United: Match Preview and Prediction
Premier League, Gameweek 9 | Saturday 31 October 2026 | Stamford Bridge,
This weekend’s clash between Chelsea and Manchester United sees two teams desperately in need of a win. While there are few fans who would be confident about either side, Chelsea will be hurting after suffering a home defeat to Spurs and United are coming off one of their worst days of the season. There must be some positives coming out of this game.
Let’s break it down. Chelsea vs Manchester United: Match Preview and Prediction
Where the teams sit currently.
Chelsea are sitting at 13 points from 8 games so are comfortably within the top 5. However, they were 2-0 defeated at home by Tottenham last Saturday. It was their first time losing to Spurs at home since 2018 and saw Cole Palmer sent off after receiving two yellows in a matter of minutes. It was a frustrating day at the Bridge.
United are in a much worse position. They have just 7 points from 8 games, sitting 16th and have yet to win an away game in the league this season. On Sunday, they were thrashed by Bournemouth at Old Trafford, losing 3-0. This came only days after losing 4-1 to Como. Michael Carrick is under serious pressure and there is plenty of noise coming out of the club.
Chelsea News
The main news is João Pedro suffered a thigh injury during training and will miss the Spurs game, with Xabi Alonso saying he will be out for a while. The Brazilian has been the Blues’ top scorer in the league, which is not great.
Palmer is good news though. The one-game suspension he received was served in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup game at Liverpool, meaning he is available on Saturday. He is a vital player to have available for Chelsea and will start the game behind Morgan Rogers in a 3-4-2-1 formation.
Emiliano Martinez has undergone jaw surgery and will be missing, so Mike Penders is likely to feature in goal. Reece James will not return until January. Pep Chavarria is also coming back from an unknown injury and could have a role on the left. However, they are playing at Anfield in the middle of the week and Alonso may move around a few players.
Manchester United News
United have a long list of injuries. Benjamin Sesko will not return until the new year, Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu are both missing and Marcus Rashford is a doubt due to a hip injury. Kobbie Mainoo is also a doubt.
The most notable news is Bruno Fernandes. He was not selected to play against Bournemouth after reports he criticised the tactics of the coaching staff after the defeat to Como. Carrick said it was a tactical decision, however it is totally understandable why people will question his absence. They have only won once in their last eleven league games without Bruno in the starting line-up and it would be a big risk to leave him out. Expect him back.
They are likely to go with a 4-2-3-1. Bryan Mbeumo will play up front with Amad Diallo and Matheus Cunha on the wings. Chelsea vs Manchester United: Match Preview and Prediction

Key battles
Palmer & Quenda vs United midfield. Both of United’s holding midfielders have a long way to run. If one of them comes out to play with Palmer then you leave space for Geovany Quenda or someone running from deep. Carlos Baleba has played very little in this role in the league this season, so it’ll be a challenge.
Mbeumo vs Chelsea back three. Mbeumo has had the most shots of any player in the United team and is the only one that regularly looks threatening. Maxence Lacroix likes to come out and press, this can be an issue if he gets caught out but can be great if he does get some pressure on. But if he doesn’t do well then there’s space to exploit behind him.
Chelsea Wing-backs. Pedro Neto and Marco Palestra like to play high up the park which gives them most of their positive moments but also gives space for Diallo and Cunha to run into on the counter. Neto has been cautioned in his last two league games so he needs to stay cautious.
Head to head
Overall United have more wins than Chelsea in Premier League history (21 to 20) but there have been 27 draws. Their last meeting was in April at Stamford Bridge and United won 1-0, thanks to a Cunha goal late in the first half. However, the last time they met, in the previous year, Chelsea played better. As such, it tends to be a see-saw affair. Read More Chelsea vs Manchester United: Match Preview and Prediction
Prediction
I think Chelsea will win this, but they won’t win comfortably. They are playing at home, have the better squad on paper and should dominate their midfield. Palmer comes back into the team which will be a huge boost, and United are not great on the road. They haven’t won a single league game on their travels so it’s hard to see them winning at Stamford Bridge.
However, this won’t be an easy win. Chelsea have leaked 15 goals in their last 8 games, which is far too many given the quality of chances that have come their way. They also appear nervous in games that open up, and United will create a couple of chances. If Mbeumo gets behind then that will cause problems too. Furthermore, Joao Pedro’s absence means they are slightly off the pace upfront. Chelsea vs Manchester United: Match Preview and Prediction
